Iran and New Zealand Share Thrilling 2-2 Draw in FIFA World Cup Clash

Iran will next face Belgium in Los Angeles on Sunday

Los Angeles: (Web Desk) – Iran staged a dramatic double comeback to secure a 2-2 draw against New Zealand in a highly entertaining FIFA World Cup match at the Los Angeles Stadium.

The Group G encounter saw New Zealand take an early lead when Elijah Just finished clinically from a Chris Wood assist, sending the ball into the net with a powerful volley from inside the penalty area. The goal was celebrated by sections of the crowd, including some Iranian government critics who displayed pre-revolution flags during the match. There were also reports of booing during Iran’s national anthem before kickoff.

Despite the tense atmosphere, the majority of the more than 70,000 spectators strongly supported the Iranian side, chanting “Iran! Iran!” throughout the match. Iran equalised in the first half through Ramin Rezaeian, who reacted quickly to a blocked attempt and slotted the ball past the advancing goalkeeper.

New Zealand regained the lead early in the second half when Chris Wood once again set up Elijah Just, who struck a powerful finish to make it 2-1. However, Iran responded within 10 minutes as Mehdi Mohebbi headed home a precise cross from Rezaeian, leveling the match at 2-2.

The result leaves all teams in Group G level on points, following another 1-1 draw between Belgium and Egypt earlier in the day.

New Zealand, making their third World Cup appearance, are still searching for their first-ever win in the tournament after seven matches. Iran, meanwhile, continue their push for a historic first qualification to the knockout stage.

Iran will next face Belgium in Los Angeles on Sunday, while New Zealand take on Egypt in Vancouver.
