Iran & New Zealand – (Web Desk) – Iran and New Zealand played out a thrilling Iran New Zealand 2-2 World Cup draw on Monday night in Los Angeles, in a match full of fight, drama, and politics off the pitch.

New Zealand struck first in just the seventh minute. Striker Elijah Just finished smartly after a neat move involving Chris Wood and Sarpreet Singh. It was a dream start for the tournament’s lowest-ranked side.

Iran hit back before half-time. Wingback Ramin Rezaeian pounced on a rebound to level the score in the 32nd minute, giving Team Melli a lifeline in front of a loud, pro-Iran crowd.

But New Zealand refused to sit back. Just grabbed his second goal on the hour mark after Liberato Cacace won the ball in midfield and played in Wood, who linked up brilliantly with Just once again.

Iran would not give up. Mohammad Mohebi rose highest to head home from Rezaeian’s excellent cross in the 64th minute, sparking wild celebrations inside the stadium.

The final thirty minutes saw Iran push hard for a winner. But a mix of poor finishing and stubborn New Zealand defending kept the score level at 2-2.

Off the pitch, hundreds of protesters gathered outside the venue opposing Iran’s ruling government. Inside the stadium, anti-government symbols were visible despite FIFA’s political messaging ban. The Iranian anthem was met with both cheers and boos.

The draw leaves Group G wide open. Egypt and Belgium also drew on the same day, meaning all four teams share one point each heading into Matchday 2.

Iran face Belgium next, while New Zealand take on Egypt on June 21.
