Heavy rains close Pak-Afghan highway near Landi Kotal

Floods, Fallen Roofs and Two Deaths. Rains Bring Misery to Khyber District as Punjab and Balochistan Also Take a Hit

Landi Kotal – (Web Desk) – Heavy rains hit Landi Kotal on Tuesday after a two day break. The downpour forced authorities to shut the Pakistan Afghanistan highway at several points. Commuters faced serious trouble getting around.

The timing was especially bad for matric students. Many of them struggled to reach their exam centers on time. Roads were flooded and movement became nearly impossible.

Rain also battered other parts of Khyber district. Tehsil Barra, Jamrud and Tirah Valley all received heavy showers. Streams flooded and the weather turned cold again. In Jamrud, one person got injured when the roof of his house collapsed.

The rains also destroyed crops and damaged fruit orchards across the area.

Just a day earlier on Monday, three young girls were hurt when a wall fell on them in Karamna area of Landi Kotal. They were Amina aged 15, Hadia aged 12 and little Maria who was just eight years old.

The situation was even worse last Friday night. Two people lost their lives when torrential rain hit Landi Kotal. A car carrying three people was swept away by floodwater. Two bodies were recovered. The search for the third person was still going on.

Meanwhile Punjab also got soaked. A new rain system entered the country on Monday and brought showers to Lahore and many other cities. Areas like The Mall, Jail Road, Ferozepur Road and Model Town all received rainfall. The temperature in Lahore was expected to stay around 24 degrees on Tuesday with humidity at 42 percent.

Many other Punjab cities also saw intermittent rain including Attock, Narowal, Toba Tek Singh and Kharian. The rain flooded roads and cut off power supply in several localities. Wheat crops near Kharian took a hit. Low lying areas in Burewala, Chiniot and Talagang also flooded.

In Balochistan temperatures dropped sharply after recent rains. Quetta and Kalat recorded a low of just 5 degrees. Ziarat was even colder at just 1 degree.

The Met Office said on Tuesday that rains will continue across the country until April 9. Snow is also expected over hilly areas of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan in the next two days.
