Google Gemini Surpasses One Billion Monthly Users Globally
Gemini Gains Billion Monthly Users as AI Competition Intensifies
ISLAMABAD: (News Desk) – Google’s Gemini AI assistant has surpassed one billion monthly users, marking a major milestone for the tech giant as competition in the artificial intelligence industry intensifies. CEO Sundar Pichai announced the figure Tuesday, describing Gemini as Google’s fastest-growing product and the company’s 14th offering to reach the billion-user mark.
Google’s tally is based on people using the Gemini app across its broader ecosystem. The achievement comes shortly after the company announced a significant restructuring of its AI operations, underscoring the importance of Gemini as Google races to strengthen its position in the rapidly evolving AI market.
The milestone arrives during a period of considerable change at Google DeepMind, the research unit responsible for developing Gemini. Demis Hassabis has recently stepped away from day-to-day management, while several prominent researchers have also departed. Among them is Jeff Dean, a longtime Google engineering leader who played a major role in the company’s AI efforts.
Google is also facing questions over the pace of its next-generation models. Its flagship Gemini 3.5 Pro, which was initially expected in June, has yet to launch. Meanwhile, competitors have introduced increasingly capable systems, particularly in AI-powered coding, an area that has emerged as one of the industry’s most commercially valuable applications.
Despite those challenges, Google has a major advantage: its enormous global user base. The company continues embedding AI features throughout its ecosystem, including Search, Gmail, Maps and YouTube, giving Gemini access to millions of existing users.
OpenAI, meanwhile, said in July that its products had reached one billion users across its platforms, although the company did not clarify whether the figure represented monthly or weekly usage. ChatGPT, launched as a free consumer app in November 2022, helped trigger the current generative AI boom and built a massive audience in less than four years.
User growth has also become increasingly important to AI companies as they seek higher valuations and prepare for future financial milestones. OpenAI reportedly filed a confidential application for an eventual initial public offering in June, making user numbers an increasingly significant indicator of its commercial reach.
Competition is also intensifying from companies such as China’s DeepSeek and San Francisco-based Anthropic, the developer of Claude. According to research firm Sensor Tower, ChatGPT’s share of the AI-assistant market dropped below 50% during the first half of the year, based on estimates derived from company data.
