Sleep experts say waking up refreshed is not simply about the number of hours spent in bed. Sleep timing, wake-up time and consistency also play important roles.
An irregular routine can interfere with the body’s internal clock, known as the circadian rhythm, making it more difficult to fall asleep at night and wake up naturally in the morning.
A BBC report explored whether it was possible to stop using an alarm for a week by following recommendations from sleep experts. The experiment focused on maintaining a regular routine, getting enough daylight, limiting phone use and improving overall sleep habits.
How Does the Body Clock Work?
The human body has an internal biological clock that operates on an approximately 24-hour cycle. It helps regulate sleep and wakefulness as well as body temperature and the release of certain hormones.
One of the strongest signals affecting this clock is light. Going to bed and waking up at broadly similar times each day can help establish a predictable rhythm.
Sleep expert Helen Burgess said maintaining a reasonably consistent bedtime allows the body to become familiar with the routine and prepare for sleep at an appropriate time.
Most adults generally require seven to nine hours of sleep per night, although individual needs differ. Some people function well on seven hours, while others need eight or nine to feel properly rested.
Why Morning Light Matters
Light is one of the most important environmental signals that regulates the circadian rhythm.
Exposure to natural light soon after waking tells the body that the day has started. Opening curtains, sitting near a bright window or taking a morning walk outdoors can help synchronise the body clock with the natural day-night cycle.
The opposite can happen at night. Exposure to bright light, particularly from prolonged screen use, may encourage alertness and interfere with the body’s preparation for sleep.

Smartphones can make it particularly difficult for people to establish a healthy bedtime routine.
Although screen light can affect sleep, experts also highlight the mental stimulation created by social media, videos and constant notifications.
What begins as a quick check of a phone can easily turn into a much longer session of scrolling, watching videos or replying to messages. This keeps the brain active when it should gradually be winding down.

Turning Off the Alarm Is Not Enough
Simply removing an alarm does not guarantee that someone will suddenly start waking naturally.

For this reason, establishing consistent sleeping and waking times is more important than simply deciding to stop setting an alarm.

People who sleep very little during the week and then spend considerably longer in bed on weekends may find it harder to maintain a stable rhythm.
Experts generally recommend keeping bedtime and wake-up times reasonably consistent throughout the week, including on days off.
Food and Caffeine Can Also Play a Role
The timing of meals may also contribute to maintaining a regular daily routine. Keeping meal times relatively consistent and avoiding a heavy dinner close to bedtime can support better sleep habits.
Caffeine is another factor worth considering. Coffee, tea and other caffeinated drinks can affect sleep, particularly when consumed later in the day. Sensitivity varies, so people experiencing sleep difficulties should consider how their evening caffeine intake affects them.
What Happened After Seven Days?
The one-week experiment did not produce an immediate transformation. At the beginning, sleeping and waking times remained somewhat inconsistent, while nighttime awakenings and external disturbances such as noise occasionally interrupted sleep.
After several days, however, the participant began waking naturally at approximately the same time.
By the end of the experiment, reliance on an alarm appeared to have decreased, while morning grogginess also improved.
The experience highlighted several basic but important habits: maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, getting morning daylight, reducing nighttime phone use and ensuring adequate sleep.

Late-night phone use, inconsistent sleeping schedules and dependence on multiple alarms are habits that can make mornings more difficult.
