Abdul El-Sayed Wins Michigan Senate Seat in a Historic Victory

Democrat becomes the first Muslim elected to the US Senate, while Adam Hamilton scores a rare win in Kansas.

Democrat – (Special Correspondent/Web Desk) – Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has won Michigan’s open US Senate seat, according to media projections on Tuesday. He is the first Muslim ever elected to the Senate.

The win keeps an important seat in Democratic hands. It also blocks Republicans from taking the seat of retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters.

El-Sayed is 42 and used to work as a public health official. He ran on lowering costs for working families and reducing the power of big money in politics.

His plan included Medicare for All, a government-funded healthcare system. Progressives in his party have pushed for this idea for years.

The race was close. His opponent, Mike Rogers, is 63 and a former congressman and FBI agent. Donald Trump and national Republicans backed him strongly.

Rogers tried to paint El-Sayed as a radical. He pointed to alleged ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. El-Sayed denies this, and no evidence supports the claim. Democrats said the attacks relied on Islamophobic tropes.

Rogers also worked hard to win over Jewish voters. Some of them felt uneasy about El-Sayed’s opposition to US military aid for Israel. He has also called Israel’s actions in Gaza genocide.

In the end, Rogers struggled with voter worries about the economy and Trump’s low ratings. In the final weeks, he broke with the president on the war in Iran and the trade dispute with Canada. He said ending both would help bring down costs.

Republicans held a 53-47 Senate majority going into Tuesday’s midterm elections. Democrats needed a net gain of four seats to take control.

A Big Surprise in Kansas

Adam Hamilton also won his Senate race in Kansas, according to media projections. He beat Trump-backed Republican Roger Marshall. Hamilton is the state’s first Democrat elected senator in 94 years.

It was a striking result. Trump carried Kansas by more than 16 points in 2024, and the race was first seen as safe for Republicans. The projections also suggest Democrats have secured control of the chamber.

Hamilton is the pastor of the country’s largest United Methodist congregation. He called himself an independent-minded Democrat and focused on affordability and bipartisanship.

In his victory speech, he wore a pin that read “love one another.” He said Republicans, Democrats and independents in Kansas had all sent a message that Washington needs to change.

The race tightened in its final weeks. Trump and Vice President JD Vance both traveled to Kansas to campaign for Marshall. At an October 19 rally, Trump announced an $8 billion “harvest fuel relief program” to help farmers with diesel costs.
