Democrats Win House as Midterm Wave Rocks Trump and Republicans

Voters send a strong message on prices, tariffs and the Iran war, while the fight for control of the Senate stays open.

Democrats – (Special Correspondent/Web Desk) – Democrats win House control in a powerful midterm night that shook the Republican Party. CNN and CNBC both projected the result on Tuesday.

The win gives Democrats the power to block President Donald Trump’s plans in Congress. It also lets them open wide investigations into his administration for the last two years of his term.

Many voters saw the vote as a verdict on Trump’s second term. Rising living costs, tariffs and the war with Iran, which has pushed fuel prices up, hurt Republicans. Trump’s approval ratings are also close to record lows.

One of the biggest shocks came in South Carolina. Democrat Annie Andrews, a pediatrician, beat Darline Graham, according to media projections. Graham had Trump’s backing and was appointed to replace her brother, Senator Lindsey Graham, after his death in July. Democrats had not won a Senate race in the state since 1998.

Republicans also lost a Senate seat in North Carolina. Former governor Roy Cooper beat the candidate Trump had chosen.

Democrats held key seats too. Jon Ossoff won re-election in Georgia. In New Hampshire, Chris Pappas became the first openly gay man elected to the Senate.

Republicans started the night with a 53-47 Senate majority. Democrats need four net gains to take control. With two seats already flipped, the Senate race is still not settled.

The House results showed how deep the damage went. In Indiana, Democrat JD Ford defeated Republican Victoria Spartz in a district Trump won by 17 points in 2024. Democrats also flipped a House seat in North Carolina. In Florida, new district lines did not bring the gains Republicans expected.

In Georgia, Keisha Lance Bottoms won the governor’s race. She is the first Black woman elected governor in US history, and her win ends 24 years of Republican control.

Republicans had some wins. Byron Donalds won the Florida governor’s race, and Ashley Moody kept her Senate seat.

A White House official said the mood around Trump is “defiant.” The official warned, “Buckle up.”

Trump had already talked about facing a Democratic Congress. He said he would veto everything, but he also admitted he might make deals with Democrats later.
