Ossoff Wins Georgia Senate Seat, Keeping Democrats’ Majority Hopes Alive
The Democratic senator beat Trump-backed Republican Mike Collins in one of the closest races in the country, and the fight for Senate control goes on.
Georgia – (Special Correspondent/Web Desk) – Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff has kept his Georgia Senate seat, according to media projections made on Tuesday night. He beat Republican Congressman Mike Collins, who had the support of President Donald Trump.
The win is a big boost for Democrats. They want to take back control of the Senate, and Georgia was a seat they simply had to hold.
The result also stands out because Trump carried Georgia by two points in the 2024 presidential race. Even so, Ossoff came out on top this time.
Many people see Ossoff as a possible Democratic presidential candidate in 2028. He also had a big money advantage, raising $126 million more than Collins.
Collins had some help of his own. Outside groups spent $18 million to back him after he made it through a three-way Republican primary and a runoff.
Trump chose Collins over Derek Dooley, a former college football coach. Dooley was backed by Governor Brian Kemp, who is leaving office soon.
Republicans began election day with a 53-47 majority in the Senate. That means Democrats needed to gain four seats to take control.
Holding Georgia was only one step on that path. Democrats also had to keep their seat in Michigan and beat Republican senators in Maine and North Carolina.
They also hoped to win in states where Trump took big leads in 2024, such as Ohio, Alaska, Iowa and Texas. Votes from many of those races were still being counted.
A Democratic majority would give the party more say over new laws and top government jobs. It would also make life harder for Trump as he tries to push his plans through during the rest of his term.
For now, the Georgia result gives Democrats a real reason to cheer. Still, the battle for the Senate is far from over, and the final picture will become clear as more results arrive.
