Electric Vehicles Drive Pakistan’s Automotive Industry Transformation

Chinese Automakers Accelerate Pakistan’s Electric Vehicle Growth

ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk) – Pakistan’s automobile sector is undergoing a significant transformation as electric and hybrid vehicles increasingly replace traditional petrol-powered models, marking a major shift in the country’s transportation landscape.

According to industry projections, approximately 23 new vehicle models are expected to enter the Pakistani market between June and December 2026. Of these, around 20 models will incorporate electric technologies, including hybrid, plug-in hybrid and range-extended powertrains.

Industry estimates suggest that nearly 87 percent of all upcoming vehicle launches will feature electric, hybrid or alternative-energy systems, highlighting the rapid pace of Pakistan’s transition toward cleaner and more efficient mobility solutions.

Experts say Chinese automobile manufacturers are playing a pivotal role in this development by expanding their footprint in Pakistan through partnerships with local companies and introducing a wider range of electric and hybrid vehicles.

Automotive analyst Shafiq Ahmed Sheikh noted that the momentum for new energy vehicles began under the Automotive Industry Development and Export Policy 2021–26, which established the framework for the adoption of electric mobility and encouraged investment in the sector.

Government officials and industry stakeholders believe the transition will help reduce Pakistan’s reliance on imported petroleum products and liquefied natural gas (LNG), easing pressure on foreign exchange reserves and improving energy security.

According to estimates, widespread adoption of electric mobility could save the country approximately $4.5 billion annually in energy import costs, making the shift economically beneficial in addition to its environmental advantages.

To support this transition, the government has introduced a range of incentives aimed at encouraging both manufacturers and consumers to embrace electric vehicles. These measures include policy support, investment facilitation and initiatives designed to make electric transportation more accessible.

With a growing number of new models expected to enter the market and increasing interest from global and regional automakers, Pakistan appears set to accelerate its journey toward a cleaner and more sustainable automotive future.
