Darren Jones, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Backs Burnham

What Darren Jones, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Said About Burnham's Plans

UK – (Web Desk) – Darren Jones, chief secretary to the treasury, has given his backing to Andy Burnham. He shared the news on Wednesday, just days before Burnham is set to take over as Labour leader.

Jones is a close ally of outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer. He said his talks with Burnham about money matters had put his mind at ease.

Burnham caused a stir last year. He said Britain should stop being “in hock to the bond markets.” Investors did not like those words. Burnham later said people got his point wrong.

Jones spoke to Sky News about the comment. He said markets, trade unions, and the Labour Party would likely accept some extra borrowing. But there is one condition. The plan behind it must be clear and solid.

“There is room to borrow a little bit more,” Jones said. Still, he noted that Burnham has not shared exact spending plans yet.

Jones explained their talks in simple terms. He said they spoke a lot about Burnham’s thinking on the economy. He added that they also discussed his own ideas and possible paths forward for the next government.

Starmer announced he would step down after weeks of pressure. His party faced low poll numbers and tough losses in local elections. This opened the door for a new Labour leader.

The leadership race begins on July 9. Right now, Burnham is the only person running. Many expect him to win without a real contest. If that happens, he could become the new prime minister by mid-July.
