NEW YORK: (Web Desk) – At the United Nations, China’s Permanent Representative Fu Cong stated that Beijing’s veto of a draft resolution on the Strait of Hormuz at the United Nations Security Council helped prevent further escalation in the region and created space for a temporary ceasefire and dialogue.
Speaking during a United Nations General Assembly session addressing the use of veto power, the Chinese envoy said Beijing recognizes the concerns of Gulf nations. However, he stressed that the Security Council’s role should be to de-escalate tensions rather than justify unilateral military actions.

He emphasized that no steps should be taken that encourage the use of force or intensify the conflict. According to Fu Cong, tensions affecting maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz are closely linked to the broader Iran-related conflict.
The Chinese representative underlined that a comprehensive ceasefire is essential for any meaningful and lasting improvement in the situation.
