BCB Suspends Head Coach Chandika Hathurusingha for Misconduct
Allegations Include Player Assault and Training Absences
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced the suspension of head coach Chandika Hathurusingha due to disciplinary issues.
The suspension stems from serious misconduct allegations, including an alleged assault on a player and repeated absences from training sessions, which violated the terms of his contract. Hathurusingha, who began his second stint as Bangladesh’s head coach in February 2023, will be suspended for 48 hours before being officially dismissed. The BCB has also served him with a show-cause notice.
In the meantime, former West Indies coach Phil Simmons will step in as interim coach, leading the team until the 2025 Champions Trophy, scheduled for February.
BCB President Faruque Ahmed addressed the media, explaining the reasons for Hathurusingha’s suspension: “Hathurusingha faces two serious misconduct charges, which have prompted us to take this action. His behavior does not align with the standards we uphold for our coaching staff.”
Despite a historic 2-0 Test series win over Pakistan earlier this year under Hathurusingha’s guidance, his tenure has come under scrutiny due to Bangladesh’s underperformance in major tournaments. The team’s lackluster showings at the previous year’s ODI World Cup and the recent T20 World Cup, co-hosted by the Caribbean and the USA, further fueled criticism of his leadership.
Calls for change intensified following Bangladesh’s disappointing tour of India, where they endured a 2-0 loss in Tests and a 3-0 defeat in T20Is.
