TEHRAN: (News Desk) – Iran has announced the suspension of its commitments under a recent memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United States, accusing Washington of violating the terms of the agreement.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, who heads the technical negotiating team, said on Saturday that the US had failed to fulfill its obligations under the MoU, prompting Tehran to halt implementation of its own commitments.

According to Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency, Gharibabadi said that the United States had violated all of its responsibilities under the agreement and that Iran had also stopped implementing its obligations, saying the country was currently focused on its defense.

Iran has accused the US of attempting to take control of the strategic Strait of Hormuz while ignoring an agreement that called for management of the key waterway through consultation with Oman and other regional countries.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei, cited by Tasnim News Agency, said a specific clause of the MoU clearly stated that the Strait of Hormuz should be managed in consultation with Oman and regional states. He alleged that the US was seeking control of the vital maritime route by disregarding the agreement.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei said in a message to the nation that the US had repeatedly violated the MoU, claiming that the repeated breaches had exposed Washington’s intentions and questioned the credibility of commitments signed by former US President Donald Trump.

The allegations and claims by Iranian officials have not been independently verified.
