Bolivia Military Base Explosion Kills Nine, Injures Dozens Near Capital

“Our priority remains finding our comrades who are still missing and providing answers to their families as soon as possible,” Alarcon said during the rescue effort.

Health Minister Marcela Flores confirmed that at least 84 people have needed medical treatment. Of those, 31 are still in the hospital. Many nearby homes were also damaged by the force of the blasts.

According to AFP, thick black smoke rose over Viacha after the explosions. Windows shattered, roofs caved in, and debris scattered across the neighborhood. Families living near the base are now dealing with the aftermath.

“Our Armed Forces are reviewing their protocols, and everything needed to provide greater safety, not only for enlisted personnel and officers, but also for nearby residents living close to military bases,” Paz said.

Paz has declared a period of national mourning across Bolivia. He also urged citizens and political leaders not to turn the tragedy into a political issue during this difficult time.

Prosecutors have opened a formal investigation into the explosions. They hope to determine exactly what triggered the second, larger blast and whether safety protocols were followed at the storage site.

Rescue workers still face serious risks. Unexploded material remains scattered at the site, and parts of the damaged structure could collapse further. Crews are moving carefully as they continue their search.
