Bangladesh Premier League Won’t Return This Season, BCB Confirms

Board chief Tamim Iqbal says the tournament needs fixing before it comes back

Bangladesh – (Special Correspondent/Web Desk) -The Bangladesh Premier League will not be held this season. BCB president Tamim Iqbal shared the news with reporters on Thursday, pointing to years of trouble that have followed the tournament, from fixing claims to money troubles.

Speaking at an event in Mirpur, Tamim didn’t hold back. “I don’t think so. The BPL will not happen this year,” he told the press plainly.

The tournament began back in 2012 and remains the country’s favourite domestic cricket event. Still, it has never quite matched the money-making power of leagues like the IPL or Australia’s Big Bash.

Daily newspaper Prothom Alo reported that the board lost nearly 400 million taka, close to $3.27 million, over the past two seasons alone. That kind of loss is hard to ignore.

Tamim didn’t shy away from admitting the tough spot players are in either. “If I was a player, I’d be disheartened too,” he said, showing he understands the frustration many will feel.

He added that the board wants any future edition to be something everyone can be proud of, not another troubled season.

Trouble has piled up in recent times. Back in May, the BCB suspended one player along with several team officials after a corruption probe uncovered betting violations linked to the league.

The last season also saw matches pushed around after local players refused to take the field. Their protest came after a board official’s comments about player pay drew widespread anger.

Despite the pause, Tamim made it clear the league isn’t gone for good. “I don’t want to hurry. I want to do it right,” he said, adding he’s ready to wait six months or even a year if that’s what proper planning takes.
