Spain Train Crash Near Toledo Kills 64 as Rescue Continues
Two high-speed trains collided on the Madrid-Andalusia line, and officials fear the number of victims may grow in the coming hours.
Spain – (Special Correspondent/Web Desk) – A Spain train crash near Toledo has killed at least 64 people, the Castilla-La Mancha regional government said on Wednesday. Rescue teams are still searching the wrecked carriages.
The accident happened on the Madrid-Andalusia high-speed line near the town of Urda. A Renfe AVE train and an Iryo train collided just after 9am local time.
Two Iryo carriages came off the track. Local TV showed one carriage left on a raised section of the line. Twisted metal and broken panels lay across the slope below.

Regional spokesperson Esther Padilla said the number of victims will likely go up. She said 147 people were on the Iryo train and 397 were on the Renfe train.
The cause is not yet clear. Rail operator Adif said the crash took place on the line between Madrid and Seville.
A passenger named Miguel told Cope Radio what he heard. He described a huge roar and a heavy thud that lasted about 10 seconds. Through the window, he saw a wrecked train.

Urda mayor Manuel Galan said emergency services asked the town council to prepare a sports hall. It will house passengers and the injured.
This is the second major rail crash on the same line this year. In January, a similar accident near Adamuz, in Cordoba province, killed 46 people. It sparked a debate about spending on rail maintenance.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said he was shocked. He sent his support to the victims and their families. His agenda for the day was cleared. The People’s Party also cancelled its campaign events ahead of the snap election on November 29.
