Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani Resigns From Lahore High Court

Justice Kayani Reportedly Criticises Constitutional Amendments in Resignation Letter to President

ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk) — Lahore High Court Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani has reportedly resigned, citing personal reasons and health concerns following recent surgery, according to reports circulating on Wednesday.

In his reported resignation letter addressed to the President of Pakistan, Justice Kayani referred to his judicial career at the Islamabad High Court and Lahore High Court, stating that he had presided over more than 23,000 cases during his tenure.

The judge also reportedly expressed reservations about the 26th and 27th Constitutional Amendments, arguing that the changes had affected the independence and institutional autonomy of the high courts.

He also raised concerns over what he described as the growing influence of the executive branch in judicial affairs, saying such developments had undermined judicial independence and public confidence in the justice system.

According to the reported letter, Justice Kayani intends to continue working for the protection of public rights and the promotion of legal awareness through legal practice after leaving judicial office.

The reported resignation comes a day after news emerged that Justice Kayani had been assigned to a single bench at the Lahore High Court’s Rawalpindi registry under a new duty roster scheduled to take effect on November 2, 2026.

Justice Kayani was transferred from the Islamabad High Court to the Lahore High Court in April 2026. He was previously the senior puisne judge of the Islamabad High Court and had challenged the transfer of judges between high courts.

He was scheduled to retire in February 2032, according to his reported date of birth and retirement eligibility.

The resignation and the contents of the purported letter require confirmation through an official statement or the original document.
