ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk) The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has introduced a digital patient management system titled “One Patient, One ID” at a cost of more than Rs1.25 billion, connecting five hospitals and 24 departments under its ongoing healthcare reforms.
The new system integrates patient registration and diagnostic services on a common digital platform, enabling doctors to access patients’ medical histories and records electronically through computers. The initiative aims to streamline hospital operations and improve the management of patient information.
The project has been developed jointly by the Ministry of National Health Services and the Ministry of Information Technology, with the National Information Technology Board (NITB) responsible for developing the software.
According to project details, the digital system covers all five facilities operating under PIMS: the Cardiac Centre, Children’s Hospital, Burn Centre, Maternal and Child Health Centre, and the main hospital for adult patients.
The initiative has also connected 24 departments and services, including laboratories, X-ray units, reception areas, hospital wards, emergency departments, transport services and outpatient departments (OPDs).
Through the integrated system, medical staff can access patient information electronically, while registration and diagnostic services are managed through a shared digital network. The move is expected to improve coordination between departments and make patient information more accessible.
In the next phase of digitalisation, the government plans to introduce paperless operations and barcode technology at PIMS. The Cardiac Centre is scheduled to transition to a paperless system by October 31.
The upcoming measures are intended to reduce reliance on physical records and improve the efficiency of administrative and clinical processes.
The digital reforms are part of broader efforts to modernise PIMS and strengthen healthcare administration following the incident at the hospital.
