Shaheen Afridi Defends Saim Ayub, Calls for Quicker Cricket Pitches
Pakistan Captain Says Abrar Ahmed’s Selection Will Depend on Conditions
Speaking at a press conference in Rawalpindi on Saturday, Shaheen said the pitch at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium had remained unchanged during the previous match, while dew had made conditions difficult for England.
The Pakistan skipper backed opener Saim Ayub despite his recent struggle for runs, saying the batter had been among Pakistan’s best performers in recent ODI series. He also described Fakhar Zaman as a key player for the team.
Discussing Pakistan’s upcoming match against England, Shaheen said his side could not predict how the visitors would approach the contest but would concentrate on securing victory.
He also called for faster pitches in international cricket, pointing out that the next World Cup would be played on quicker surfaces.
Shaheen described spinner Abrar Ahmed as an important option, adding that his inclusion in the playing XI would depend on the conditions.
Praising the younger members of the squad, the captain said their performances had created a positive challenge for the team management, with several players competing strongly for places.
Commenting on his own bowling pace, Shaheen acknowledged that his speed had decreased but stressed that his priority remained taking wickets whenever the team needed them.
