WAPDA Signs Rs133.18 Billion Contract for Diamer Basha Dam Project

Rs133.18 Billion Agreement Advances Work on Pakistan’s Diamer Basha Dam

ISLAMABAD: (News Desk) – The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has signed the HM-1 contract for the Diamer Basha Dam Project, worth Rs133.18 billion, with the PowerChina–IKAN Joint Venture (JV).

The agreement was signed at a ceremony held at WAPDA House, marking a key step in the development of the dam’s hydro-mechanical infrastructure.

The HM-1 contract covers the manufacturing, supply and installation of hydro-mechanical equipment and hydraulic steel structures required for the project. The work includes the installation of gates and steel structures designed to regulate water flows at the dam.

Under the agreement, the equipment will be installed at flushing tunnels on both the left and right banks, as well as at the dam’s power intakes and outlets. The contract also includes steel lining, hoisting and pumping systems, along with associated electrical works.

The Diamer Basha Dam is a priority project of the federal government aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s water, food and energy security. The dam is being constructed across the River Indus, approximately 40 kilometres downstream of Chilas.

Upon completion, the project is expected to provide a gross water storage capacity of 8.1 million acre-feet (MAF) and an installed electricity generation capacity of 4,500 megawatts (MW).

The project is expected to contribute to water storage, support agricultural requirements and expand Pakistan’s power generation capacity.
