Pakistan Face India in High-Stakes Asia Cup Clash

ISLAMABAD: (Sports Desk) – Pakistan will renew their fierce rivalry with India in a much-anticipated Women’s T20 Asia Cup clash in Dubai on Saturday evening.

The match is scheduled to begin at 7:30pm, with Pakistan hoping to build on their convincing victory over Thailand. However, the Greenshirts face a much tougher challenge against an Indian side that has dominated their recent encounters.

Pakistan’s bowling attack will have a major task on its hands, particularly against India’s dangerous opening combination of Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma. Their batters, meanwhile, will need to produce a strong total if Pakistan are to put India under pressure.

India could also use the contest to give their middle-order players valuable time in the middle as they prepare for the semi-finals.

The teams most recently met at the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Birmingham, where India registered a comfortable 64-run victory. India scored 170 for six before dismissing Pakistan for 106, with Deepti Sharma producing a match-winning spell of 5-10.

India also hold a commanding advantage in the overall T20I record. They have won 14 of the 17 meetings between the rivals, while Pakistan have recorded three victories.

India have further strengthened their dominance by winning eight of their last nine matches against Pakistan. Pakistan’s most recent T20I victory over India came in the 2022 Asia Cup, when they prevailed by 13 runs.

Pakistan Playing Down the Rivalry

Pakistan opener Ayesha Zafar has sought to ease the pressure surrounding the fixture, describing the encounter as another match while insisting that her team remains focused on taking the tournament one game at a time.

She said Pakistan would aim to maintain the momentum gained from their big win over Thailand and put in a complete performance against their neighbours.

Zafar also highlighted the importance of fielding, saying the team had been working hard in all three departments and could not afford to compromise on their work in the field.

India have already secured their place in the semi-finals with a game remaining. Pakistan, meanwhile, need one victory from their two remaining matches to secure qualification.

Although a defeat would not necessarily end Pakistan’s hopes, the enormous attention surrounding an India-Pakistan encounter adds another layer of pressure to the contest.

India all-rounder Deepti Sharma said her side would look to maintain their recent superiority over Pakistan when the two teams meet in Dubai.

With India entering the game as clear favourites, Pakistan will need a disciplined performance with both bat and ball to produce an upset.
