Warwickshire clinch ninth County Championship title at Edgbaston

Edgbaston (Sports Desk) – Warwickshire secured their ninth County Championship title on Saturday after completing a dominant innings-and-79-run victory over Leicestershire at Edgbaston in the final round of the season.

The Birmingham-based side recorded their seventh victory in 14 matches, giving them an unassailable lead at the top of the First Division standings. The triumph also marked Warwickshire’s first County Championship title since 2021.

Ethan Bamber, Warwickshire’s leading wicket-taker this season, completed the victory by taking 5-52 to finish with impressive match figures of 9-94. Former England all-rounder Chris Woakes also played a key role, claiming 3-38 in front of his home supporters.

Warwickshire completed the victory on the third day of the four-day fixture, bringing their successful championship campaign to a memorable conclusion.

Oliver Hannon-Dalby praised the contribution of veteran all-rounder Woakes, 37, who retired from international duty last year. Woakes contributed 228 runs and 27 wickets to Warwickshire’s title-winning campaign this season.

Hannon-Dalby highlighted Woakes’ commitment to the county, joking that the veteran could have been enjoying time in Saint-Tropez but instead chose to remain with Warwickshire in pursuit of another championship.

Somerset, who are still waiting for their first County Championship title, are set to finish runners-up for the seventh time this century after Tom Lammonby and Tom Abell both struck double centuries against Surrey at Taunton on Saturday.
