Spain Come From Behind to Beat England 3-2

ISLAMABAD: (Sports Desk) – World champions Spain staged a remarkable comeback to defeat England 3-2 at Wembley on Saturday in an entertaining Nations League clash, denying the hosts a much-needed victory after their painful World Cup exit.

The result extended Spain’s unbeaten run to 39 matches, setting a new record for a European national team.

England endured a disastrous start when Lamine Yamal capitalised on a mistake by defender Marc Guehi to open the scoring. Spain dominated the early stages and created several opportunities to extend their advantage.

However, England responded strongly and levelled the contest in the 36th minute. Anthony Gordon finished a well-worked team move to give the hosts renewed confidence.

Just four minutes later, England completed the turnaround. Captain Harry Kane rose to meet Nico O’Reilly’s cross, with the ball taking a deflection off Marc Cucurella before finding the net.

Thomas Tuchel’s side had an opportunity to strengthen their position early in the second half when they were awarded a penalty following a VAR review for a foul by Rodri on Jude Bellingham.

Kane stepped up but slipped while taking the spot-kick, sending his effort against the crossbar and missing the chance to put England two goals ahead.

Spain immediately increased the pressure and turned the match around through substitutes Alex Baena and Mikel Oyarzabal. Baena equalised in the 60th minute after England lost possession, before Oyarzabal completed the comeback by lifting the ball over goalkeeper James Trafford.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente said his team had largely controlled the contest and believed they could have recovered even if England had taken a 3-1 lead.

Reflecting on Spain’s remarkable unbeaten streak, De la Fuente said the team remained focused on improving despite their impressive record.

Kane admitted England had again struggled to maintain their best level throughout the full 90 minutes.

Spain will host Croatia in their next Nations League Group A3 match on Tuesday, while England will travel to face the Czech Republic.
