US Approves Saudi Arabia $1.96 Billion Weapons Deal
US approves major Saudi Arabia air defence deal amid Yemen tensions
Saudi Arabia – (Special Correspondent/Web Desk) -The United States has given the green light to a major arms sale to Saudi Arabia. The State Department confirmed on Wednesday that it approved a Saudi Arabia $1.96 billion weapons deal aimed at strengthening the kingdom’s air defence systems.
The announcement comes at a tense moment. War is heating up across the Middle East, and Saudi Arabia is facing fresh threats from multiple directions.
Officials said the sale supports America’s broader goals in the region. In a public release, the State Department explained that helping Saudi Arabia stay secure also helps keep the wider Gulf region stable. The kingdom holds status as a Major non-NATO Ally, which means it plays a key role in US strategy for the area.
What’s Included in the Deal
A big part of this package includes up to 20,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon Systems, along with their warheads. These are precision-guided rockets. The US Navy describes them as a low-cost way to hit targets accurately while keeping collateral damage to a minimum.
BAE Systems will serve as the main contractor for this deal. The company’s facility in Nashua, New Hampshire, will handle production.
Why the Timing Matters
This deal isn’t happening in a vacuum. Saudi Arabia looks close to a fresh round of conflict with Yemen’s Houthi rebels, who receive backing from Iran.
Just this week, the Houthis fired missiles toward an airport in Abha, a city in southern Saudi Arabia. That attack followed a separate strike by Yemen’s government forces on Sanaa’s airport. The goal there was to stop a flight carrying a Houthi delegation from landing. The flight was returning from the funeral of Iran’s supreme leader. The Houthis have pointed the finger at Riyadh for that earlier strike.
Meanwhile, tensions between the US and Iran keep climbing. Washington has ramped up military strikes against Iran and reinstated a naval blockade, as both sides slide back into open conflict.
Boosting Saudi Defence Capability
According to the State Department, this weapons package will help Saudi Arabia respond to both current and future security threats. It should also improve how well Saudi forces work together with US troops, along with other allied forces from the region and NATO.
Despite the size of the deal, officials say it won’t hurt America’s own military readiness. The release specifically noted there will be no negative impact on US defence capabilities because of this sale.
As the region braces for what could be another wave of conflict, this deal signals that Washington plans to stand firmly behind its Gulf allies, especially as threats from Iran-backed groups continue to grow.
