British military says, Hormuz Tanker Attack: Fire Erupts Near Oman Coast
Hormuz tanker attack renews fears over Gulf shipping safety
Hormuz – (Web Desk) – A Hormuz tanker attack left a large ship on fire early Tuesday, just off the coast of Oman. The strike adds fresh worry to an already tense stretch of water.
British military officials said the vessel was struck while sailing south through the strait, heading toward the Gulf of Oman. The hit came from an unknown projectile.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations center said the strike landed on the ship’s left side. It happened near Limah, a coastal area in Oman. Officials said no oil or fuel leaked into the sea.
Iranian state TV later said a gas tanker had come under fire after ignoring warnings. The report did not name Iran directly but pointed toward Tehran through unnamed sources. The ship was said to be carrying gas from Qatar.
So far, Iran has not officially claimed the attack.
Last week, Iran’s military warned that all tankers passing through the strait must follow its approved paths. It said ships that stray from these routes could face a strong response. It also warned the US against stepping in.
Iran and the US had agreed to a short deal allowing free passage through the strait for 60 days. But Iran later said it wants full control over ship routes, and plans to charge fees once the deal ends. The US and Gulf Arab nations have rejected this idea.
Tensions in the strait have grown in recent months, with several ships targeted in past attacks. The waterway remains one of the busiest and most closely watched routes for oil and gas in the world.
