Marcus Smart Rockets Contract: Smart Lands 2-Year, $13M Deal in Houston

Marcus Smart has agreed to a fresh two-year deal worth $13 million with the Houston Rockets. The Marcus Smart Rockets contract also comes with a player option for year two, according to insider Shams Charania.

The move was finalized on Wednesday, July 1, right after free agency opened on June 30, 2026.

This isn’t a totally new chapter for Smart. He’s teaming up again with head coach Ime Udoka, who he’s worked with before. Smart is expected to take on a big role in Houston’s backcourt this season.

His exit from Los Angeles comes just one day after LeBron James said goodbye to the Lakers on June 30, 2026. That closed out an eight-year run for LeBron with the team.

Smart’s own time in L.A. was much shorter. He spent just one season there.

During that stretch, he averaged 9.3 points, 3 assists, and 2.8 rebounds per game. He played about 28.5 minutes a night across 62 games, mostly as a starter.

Before joining the Lakers, Smart had turned down a $5.4 million player option. He chose to test free agency instead. That decision led him to a two-year, $10.5 million deal with L.A., which also included a player option.

Smart made his mark with the Lakers too. He led the team in plus-minus, helping L.A. outscore opponents by 256 points whenever he was on the floor.

One standout moment came in Game 3 of the playoffs against the Rockets. With Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves both sidelined, Smart stepped up big. He dropped 21 points, dished out 10 assists, and grabbed five steals.

Across the whole postseason, Smart averaged 2.4 steals per game. That number ranked third among every player in the 2026 playoffs.
