Former Egyptian Doctor Faces Trial Over Facebook Post
Prosecutors Refer Doctor’s Social Media Case To Criminal Court
Alexandria: (Web Desk) – A former Egyptian doctor, Omnia Swaydan, is set to face trial after Egyptian prosecutors accused her of spreading false information through a social media post alleging mistreatment of women at a major hospital in Alexandria.
According to her lawyers, Asmaa Naeim and Mohamed Ramadan, Swaydan was arrested at her home in Egypt’s Beheira province last week and questioned over allegations of disseminating false news and misusing social media platforms. She was later released on bail of 20,000 Egyptian pounds.
The controversy stems from a Facebook post in which Swaydan detailed alleged cases of obstetric violence, patient neglect, and degrading treatment of women at Al-Shatby University Hospital, where she completed her medical residency between 2020 and 2021.
Egypt’s Public Prosecution announced on Saturday that the case had been referred to criminal court. Prosecutors stated that during questioning, Swaydan acknowledged that some incidents were based on procedures she witnessed during her training, which she believed were outside accepted medical standards due to her limited professional experience.
Authorities also said she admitted that certain claims mentioned in the post were based on accounts provided by unidentified individuals and had not been independently verified.

In the now-deleted post, Swaydan alleged multiple cases of abuse, including claims of inappropriate conduct by medical staff, verbal humiliation of patients during childbirth, and the denial of medical care to vulnerable women seeking treatment.
The allegations prompted Alexandria University to announce an internal investigation, pledging that any proven violations would be dealt with firmly and transparently.
Meanwhile, the Egyptian Doctors’ Syndicate stated that it had not received any formal complaints regarding the allegations and encouraged anyone possessing evidence to submit it through official channels.
Following Swaydan’s post, several women shared similar experiences on social media involving public hospitals across Egypt, including Al-Shatby Hospital. However, the allegations remain unverified, and independent confirmation of the claims has not been established.
