ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk) – Pakistan Medical and Dental Council has instructed all medical and dental colleges across Pakistan to implement structured mental health screening systems, responding to rising concerns over student suicides and severe psychological stress.
In an official statement, the council highlighted the intense academic pressure within medical education, describing it as a key factor affecting the mental well-being of both students and faculty. It stressed the urgent need for institutions to actively monitor and support mental health through early detection and intervention.
Under the new directives, screenings will take place at two critical points: at the time of admission to assess any existing concerns, and annually thereafter for undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as teaching staff. Institutions are required to use standardized and validated assessment tools to ensure accurate evaluations.

The PMDC also mandated that individuals identified as at risk must be referred to specialized psychiatric departments for further assessment, treatment, and follow-up care. To support this system, all institutions must establish fully functional psychiatry units along with dedicated counselling services staffed by qualified professionals.
Emphasizing accountability, the council stated that educational institutions bear direct responsibility for addressing mental health challenges within their campuses. It called for immediate and strict compliance, terming student well-being a top priority.
Officials believe these steps will strengthen mental health support frameworks within medical institutions and foster a healthier environment for future healthcare professionals.
