Lumpy Skin Disease Spreads Among Cattle Across KP

PESHAWAR: (Staff Reporter) — Lumpy skin disease has spread among cattle in several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, affecting hundreds of animals and causing multiple deaths, according to officials and local reports.

In Swabi’s Razar tehsil, the disease has reportedly been spreading for the past month, with hundreds of cattle affected in Yar Hussain, Yaqoobi, Dobian and adjoining areas.

Swabi Deputy Commissioner Dr Tariqullah said the district has a total cattle population of 268,699. He added that the livestock department was conducting a vaccination campaign to contain the spread of the disease.

According to the deputy commissioner, 14,100 vaccine doses were administered between July 7 and September 14, while 850 additional doses are currently available.

Cattle owners have also arranged private vaccination for around 40,000 animals as part of efforts to protect livestock from the disease.

Meanwhile, three cows have died and dozens of cattle have been affected by lumpy skin disease in Kaniguram tehsil of Upper South Waziristan, where a vaccination drive is also underway.

Three cases have also been reported in Charsadda despite ongoing vaccination efforts.

Cattle owners have urged the authorities to speed up vaccination in affected areas and take immediate steps to provide treatment to infected animals.

The livestock department’s ongoing campaign is aimed at containing the disease and preventing further losses among cattle owners.
