Pakistan Considers Three-Day Smart Lockdown Amid Fuel Crisis

ISLAMABAD: (Finance Reporter) – The federal government is considering a proposal to impose a three-day-a-week “smart lockdown” across the country in a bid to reduce fuel consumption amid rising petroleum prices linked to the ongoing US-Iran conflict, sources said.

Under the proposal, Friday, Saturday and Sunday could be declared closure days, while measures may also be introduced to restrict non-essential movement during the three-day period.

Sources said government offices and businesses would continue normal operations during the remaining four days of the week. The authorities are currently assessing how the proposed arrangement could affect government functions, commercial activities and public life.

The proposal is primarily aimed at conserving fuel, reducing unnecessary travel and lowering energy consumption amid growing pressure from higher petroleum costs.

Relevant ministries and government institutions will be consulted before a final decision is taken. After reviewing their recommendations and assessing the impact of the proposed measures, a comprehensive report will be submitted to the prime minister.

A final decision on the proposed three-day closure, along with any restrictions on movement, is expected to be announced by the prime minister after reviewing the report.

The proposal comes as the government explores measures to manage the economic impact of higher fuel prices and reduce pressure on the country’s energy consumption.
