Pakistan’s role as a “diplomatic bridge” between the US and Iran ..?
(By: Asghar Ali Mubarak)
Pakistan’s role has emerged as a key mediator in the recent progress of negotiations between the US and Iran. Overall, Pakistan is currently playing the role of a diplomatic bridge between the US and Iran to reduce the risks of war in the region.
What is the future of the US-Israel-Iran war? It will be known from April 2 to April 8 to 12. Progress is being made in indirect negotiations through Pakistan, positive messages have been exchanged in this regard, a deal can be reached soon, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif says that collective efforts are indispensable to end tensions in the Middle East.
Tensions are causing loss of precious lives, economy and property. The foreign ministers of Turkey and Egypt met Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif at the Prime Minister’s House. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar, National Security Advisor Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik, Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi and Foreign Secretary Ambassador Amna Baloch were also present in the meeting. The Prime Minister briefed the distinguished guests on Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts. The Prime Minister also mentioned his recent talks with the leaders. The Prime Minister expressed his best wishes for Tayyip Erdogan and Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. The Foreign Ministers briefed the Prime Minister on their respective countries’ perspectives on the ongoing situation in the Middle East. They paid tribute to the leadership of the Prime Minister and Field Marshal Asim Munir.
Foreign Office Spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andrabi has said that Pakistan has always played its role in promoting peace in the region and if Iran and the US are willing, it would be an honor for Pakistan to provide a platform for talks. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has claimed that as a result of recent contacts, a 15-point agreement has been reached between the two countries, which has further complicated the situation. Earlier, Israeli media reports had claimed that an important meeting between top US and Iranian officials could possibly take place in Islamabad, but no official confirmation has come out in this regard. According to international media, Pakistan is also active in behind-the-scenes diplomatic efforts and is playing a facilitating role in contacts between the two countries, which is hoped to reduce tensions in the region. US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff has admitted that positive and strong messages have been exchanged with Iran through Pakistan. According to the US envoy, a positive response has come from Iran to a 15-point action list, which is an indication of the success of diplomatic efforts. Pakistan has invited both countries to Islamabad for talks to defuse tensions in the Middle East. Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, has also indicated that these talks in Pakistan will cover a wide range of issues, with some reports mentioning progress.
Meanwhile, the Iranian ambassador based in the Pakistani capital has on some occasions denied direct talks and questioned Donald Trump’s claims. Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has called some of the news regarding these talks “unnecessary speculation” and urged caution. This 15-point action list has also brought a positive response from Iran. US President Donald Trump says that progress is being made in indirect talks through Pakistani diplomats. US President Trump, while talking to a British newspaper, said that the US could seize Iranian oil. The US may occupy Kharg Island. Donald Trump said that Iran allowed several Pakistani flagged ships to pass through Hormuz, the number of ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz has reached 20. Iranian Speaker Baqir Qalibaf allowed the ships to pass. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said in his message on the social media platform (X) that unnecessary speculation is being made in the media regarding the Middle East conflict and peace talks. In fact, indirect talks between the US and Iran are ongoing through the exchange of messages through Pakistan. He further wrote that in this context, the US has shared 15 points that Iran is considering. Brotherly countries Turkey and Egypt and others are also providing their support in this initiative. Pakistan is fully committed to promoting peace. Pakistan is making every effort to ensure stability in the region and the world. Negotiations and diplomacy are the only way forward, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. The post tagged Marco Rubio, Stevotkov, and Abbas Araqchi.German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has called the US war on Iran a catastrophic political mistake and a violation of international law. Speaking at a ceremony in Berlin, he said that it was a war that could have been easily avoided. If the aim of the war was to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, it was an unnecessary war. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at a cabinet meeting in Ankara that although this war is Israel’s war, the whole world is suffering from its consequences. The US has been trying to change the map of the world for decades in the name of protecting its interests. For centuries, superpowers have been changing the planet at their own will. Iran, which the US has repeatedly wanted to change, sometimes through intelligence agencies, sometimes through economic sanctions and sometimes by putting a gun on the shoulder of allies like Israel, was never soft wax? In 1953, the United States set a bitter example in history by overthrowing the elected government of Iranian Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh, but now, in the past few decades, not only have the Iranian people opened their eyes to consciousness, but they have also learned to recognize American tricks well. During the recent Israeli aggression, the United States once again tried to play the old game, but so far nothing has been achieved. In October 1951, when Iranian Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh addressed anti-British protesters outside the parliament in Tehran, the people also chanted enthusiastically, “Down with Britain!” But just two years later, on August 19, 1953, his government was overthrown through the secret “Operation Ajax.” Mohammad Mossadegh had tried to nationalize the oil industry, which was then under the control of the British Anglo-Iranian Oil Company. This decision was very popular in Iran, but the Western powers were outraged. The operation was supervised and sponsored by the United States and Britain. This incident occurred before the Iranian Revolution in 1979. Later, Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi returned from exile. On February 11, 1979, the Islamic Revolution took place in Iran, led by Seyyed Ruhollah Mousavi Khomeini. After the death of Imam Khomeini in 1989, Ali Khamenei became the second Supreme Leader of Iran. Then came June 13, 2025, when Israel attacked Iran without provocation. With this attack, the echo of regime change was heard again in Iran after 72 years. The first indication of regime change in Iran came from President Donald Trump’s tweet on June 17, 2025, in which he described Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as an “easy target.” On June 22, President Trump again said in a specific tone, “There are many targets left. If peace is not established soon, we will go to these other targets with precision, speed and skill.” This warning came after the completion of “Operation Midnight Hammer”. For this mission, US B-2 stealth bombers took off from Whitman Air Base at 12 midnight, entered Iran after an 18-hour flight and returned after bombing, but the world could not even know about it. The planes, capable of flying at slightly less than the speed of sound, flew over the Atlantic Ocean, carrying powerful bunker-busting bombs that could destroy up to 18 meters underground. Upon reaching Iran, these planes bombed bunker busters at Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan. 30 tons of explosives were dropped on Fordow. 30 Tomahawk missiles were also used, which were fired from a distance of 400 miles. Iran also confirmed the attack on three nuclear facilities, including Fordow. Although the US government also made considerable calculations in the Iran-Israel war, observers did not consider the idea of regime change mature at any point and rejected the possibility of the Iranian government falling until a ground attack. The second important point is that Iran is a strong ideological country. There is no strong opposition there that the US or Europe can trust to advance this conceptual idea. The voices of regime change rising in the US or Europe were not limited to recent events, but their roots are several decades old, and even today, the fear, statements and attacks of “regime change” echo this history. Western analysts consider the attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities to be a conspiracy to overthrow the government. However, the US and Israel are in a state of panic due to Iran’s extraordinary resistance to Israeli aggression and then the strong response to the US attack. The lack of unity on this issue was also an indication of the lack of unity in the US administration. If the situation is carefully examined, it is as clear as day that the buzz of regime change is just to divert attention and in fact the US and its allies have no other option but to spread false propaganda, false accusations and chaos. It is worth noting that the Turkish President has said that for the sake of regional peace and humanity, the network of massacres led by Netanyahu must be stopped immediately. For which every country must take a courageous and active stance. On the other hand, Iranian President Masoud Pazhakian says that he is observing the awakening of the people of many countries, including Pakistan. In his statement, he said that the people of Pakistan, Turkey, Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt and Arab countries are expressing overwhelming hatred against America, Israel and their crimes. An American professor has said that America has killed 38 million people from 1971 to 2021. Before that, America has killed millions of people in total since its establishment. America killed 3.3 million Vietnamese in the Vietnam War. The massacre of thousands of Palestinians before and after the establishment of Israel has its place. Under American patronage, Israel killed more than 80,000 innocent people in Gaza, the majority of whom were children and women. Under American patronage, 800,000 people became the fuel of the Gulf War. The year 2025 would never have been so turbulent without US President Trump. With the start of his second term in January, Republican President Donald Trump began working on starting a tariff war, a policy of protectionism in the country, a large number of illegal immigrants and the reorganization of several departments of the federal government. Along with all these achievements, the US President also performed the duty of stopping wars in the world, the most prominent of which was stopping the Pakistan-India war and the ceasefire in Gaza. The US President also played a very important role in the Iran-Israel war. After this war, the closeness between Pakistan and Iran increased sharply because Pakistan openly supported its brotherly country Iran on the diplomatic front at the global level. Under the pressure of the US President, a ceasefire was reached between Israel and Hamas, which made it possible to release Israeli and Palestinian prisoners. During this time, humanitarian aid increased in Gaza, where Israel martyred about 70,000 Palestinian civilians, most of whom were children. Even after the ceasefire agreement, Israel carried out several airstrikes on Gaza in recent weeks and tensions in the region remained high. US efforts to end the ongoing war in Ukraine after Russia’s invasion in 2022 have not been successful. President Trump has tried on various occasions to balance relations between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Attempts were made, but negotiations failed. The American magazine Time says that despite the attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities and scientists, analysts say that Iran may now be more determined to take the path of obtaining nuclear weapons in order to secure its existence. The bullying of American imperialism has forced other countries in the world to think the same way that making nuclear weapons is inevitable for their freedom, independence and survival. The example of Venezuela is in front of us when the president and his wife were kidnapped by the United States because US President Trump said that he would sell 80 percent of Venezuela’s oil for free, while Venezuela has the world’s largest oil reserves. The spokesman for the Iranian Security Council made the statement that we are thinking of withdrawing from the NPT because joining it has not benefited us at all, but has caused us harm. There are twenty-three American military bases in the Gulf countries where 600 American and Israeli planes have been attacking simultaneously day and night. The US-Israeli war is being analyzed and commented on all over the world. The female host of the Al Arabiya TV program, in which American author and senior national security editor Brandon said that Israel is just a few days away from running out of its Aero interceptors. Brandon said that Iran has shown a brilliant strategy. The United States is to tire Israel so much that their reserves run out and the United States bows to internal, political, and economic pressure. The situation is really getting worse. Israel is just a few days away from running out of its interceptors, and the United States has also used up forty percent of its THAAD reserves and only has three weeks of stock left. If the pace of the war increases, they will run out even faster. The Iranian strategy has been to gradually tire it out from the beginning. And we underestimated their missile reserves. For which we are paying the price now. And I think that neither Trump, nor Iran, nor Israel is in the mood for serious negotiations. So we are going to a more dangerous level and perhaps the United States will have to see a “Gallipoli” scene again in the Strait of Hormuz. This will not end well. A few days ago, 250,000 people in the United States called for the impeachment of President Trump. The ongoing tensions in the Middle East and the sharp increase in oil prices in the global market are expected to put pressure on Pakistan’s economy, but experts say the changes in the energy sector in recent years may mitigate this impact to some extent. In the past, the sharp increase in oil prices in 2008 and 2022 had severely affected Pakistan’s economy, leading to increased inflation, a decline in foreign exchange reserves and economic instability, but now the situation looks relatively better due to diversification of energy sources. There has been a significant increase in the use of solar energy in Pakistan, which now accounts for about 20 to 25 percent of total electricity consumption. According to experts, this trend has significantly reduced oil and gas imports and made it possible to save billions of dollars. Similarly, the share of electricity generation from furnace oil has decreased from about 35 percent to less than one percent in the last decade, while the use of LNG has increased. Overall, dependence on imported fuel has decreased by about 40 percent. Hydropower generation has also increased, but the sector has not been able to achieve its full potential due to delays in major projects. The use of indigenous coal has increased under the Thar Coal Project, which now contributes more than 11 percent to power generation and will also be used for fertilizer production in the future. Nuclear energy has also emerged as a stable source for Pakistan, with its share now exceeding 16 percent, compared to less than 5 percent in 2015. However, issues such as shortcomings in the energy transmission system, dependence on oil in the transport sector and reduced efficient use of energy continue to exist. According to experts, oil prices in global markets have increased dangerously, while the spread of war has intensified fears of an energy crisis around the world. According to the World News Agency, the price of Brent crude has increased by $ 3.09 to $ 115.66 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate has also increased to $ 102.56 per barrel. In just one month, Brent recorded an extraordinary increase of 59 percent, which is the biggest increase since the Gulf War in 1990. The main reason for this sharp increase is the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world’s oil and gas passes. Due to the war, the danger is no longer limited to the Gulf, but important trade routes such as the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab have also come under threat. The situation became more serious when Yemen’s Houthi rebels attacked Israel for the first time, which widened the scope of the war to the entire Middle East. After these attacks, global shipping routes and oil shipments have been severely threatened. On the other hand, Saudi Arabia has changed the direction of its oil exports and started shipping 4.6 million barrels of oil per day through Yanbu Port, but if this route is also affected, the supply may face further crisis. Meanwhile, there are reports that Oman’s Salalah terminal has also been damaged in the attacks, while Iran has made it clear that if the US launches a ground attack, it will be responded to with full force. While diplomatic activities have also been intensified from Pakistan, the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt met with Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar in Pakistan yesterday to extinguish the fire of war. The four foreign ministers discussed measures to end the war in the region and possible US-Iran talks. Experts say that if the scope of the war expands further, oil prices could touch a new high, which will have a severe impact on the global economy.
