Mistral Raises $830 Million for AI Data Centre

Mistral Targets Custom AI Solutions with New Data Centre

NEW YORK (Web Desk) – French AI pioneer Mistral announced on Monday that it has raised $830 million to build a cutting-edge data centre near Paris, equipped with the latest computing hardware.

The scale of the investment—modest compared with the hundreds of billions spent by American AI and cloud computing giants—highlights Mistral’s more targeted approach. CEO Arthur Mensch said the facility will address “surging and sustained demand from governments, enterprises, and research institutions seeking to build their own customized AI environments rather than rely on third-party cloud providers.”

The Bruyeres-le-Chatel site, southwest of Paris, is scheduled to become operational in Q2 2026 and will host nearly 14,000 of Nvidia’s GB300 graphics processing units. The project was first unveiled at the Paris AI Summit last year.

France has positioned itself as an attractive location for energy-intensive AI centres, leveraging abundant nuclear power and government-identified “turnkey” sites ready for construction. European nations, keen to reduce reliance on American providers, are promoting “sovereign” computing infrastructure within their borders.

Mistral has also committed 1.2 billion euros ($1.4 billion) to a Swedish data centre project. By the end of 2027, the company aims to operate computing capacity consuming 200 megawatts of electricity—smaller than the gigawatt-scale operations of US hyperscalers like OpenAI, Microsoft, or Google.

Instead of chasing general-purpose AI at massive scale, Mistral focuses on bespoke AI solutions for clients, including Netherlands-based ASML, a key investor and supplier of chipmaking machinery.

Seven banks, including HSBC and French heavyweights such as BNP Paribas, participated in the funding round. Mistral also collaborates with AFP, using the agency’s archives to power its Le Chat chatbot.
