Karachi Port Surpasses Last Year’s Transshipment Record

Middle East Tensions Boost Karachi Port Transshipment Activity

KARACHI: (Web Desk) – Amid the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, Karachi Port has emerged as a major hub for shipping and transshipment, handling more containers in just the first 24 days of this month than it did in the entire previous year.

Industry observers say the conflict has opened unique business opportunities for the port. Karachi, being the closest major port to the Persian Gulf, is strategically positioned as hundreds of ships await the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, carrying millions of containers. Temporary storage at Karachi Port has become a priority to prevent losses from idle vessels, accelerating the handling and movement of containers.

In figures, the port managed 8,313 transshipment containers in just 24 days this month, surpassing last year’s total of 8,300 containers.

Other Pakistani ports, including Port Qasim and Gwadar Port, are also drawing attention from global shipping lines, competing with major Gulf ports. While reminiscent of the business slowdown seen during the Iran War, Pakistan’s port sector is now witnessing a notable surge in activity.
