Widespread Rain Forecast as Monsoon Spell Continues Across Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: (News Desk) – The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast rain and thunderstorms across several parts of the country today, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as the current monsoon spell continues.

According to the weather department, rain and cloudy conditions are expected in Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot and Garhi Dupatta in Azad Kashmir. In Gilgit-Baltistan, rainfall has been forecast for Gilgit, Skardu and Astore, while Babusar, Chilas, Gupis and Bunji may also receive showers.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, rain is expected in Peshawar, Chitral, Dir, Malam Jabba, Saidu Sharif and Abbottabad.

The forecast also includes Islamabad, Murree, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Attock, Chakwal and Jhelum in Punjab, while cloudy weather is expected in Sargodha, Sahiwal and Dera Ghazi Khan.

Yesterday, Director General of the Meteorological Department Irfan Virk said the current monsoon spell would continue for several more days. He added that a brief break was expected after the spell before rainfall resumes.

Rawalpindi Placed on Rain Emergency

Meanwhile, the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Rawalpindi has placed the city under high alert and rain emergency following heavy rainfall.

According to WASA officials, 115 millimetres of rain was recorded at Shamsabad, the highest rainfall reported in the city during the current spell.

Water levels in Nala Lai reached 10.5 feet at Katarian and 8.5 feet at Gowalmandi. Authorities have deployed heavy machinery to vulnerable and low-lying areas, while drainage operations are continuing.

WASA Managing Director has urged residents not to remove drain covers or throw waste into drainage channels, warning that such practices can obstruct the flow of rainwater and worsen urban flooding.

WASA teams are maintaining continuous surveillance of Nala Lai and drainage channels across Rawalpindi. Staff leave has also been cancelled, with field teams instructed to remain on emergency duty.

Heavy machinery has been positioned at key locations including Liaquat Bagh, Committee Chowk Underpass and Murree Road, while additional equipment has been deployed in Dhok Khuba, Circular Road and Sadiqabad.

Authorities said preparations and monitoring would continue as more rain is expected across the region.
