AI generates fetishised images exploiting disabled women online
AI Generated Images of Disabled Women Are Going Viral and Advocates Say It Has Gone Too Far
Britain – (Web Desk) – Charities and disability advocates in Britain are speaking out. They are angry about a growing trend. AI is being used to create sexualised images of women with disabilities. These images look real. They show women with Down syndrome, vitiligo and albinism. Millions of people are watching them on social media.
The problem is that most of these images are not labelled as AI. People think they are real. Some creators even take photos of non-disabled women and alter them using AI to make them look like they have Down syndrome.
One TikTok video got 4 million views. It showed a young woman dancing. She appeared to have Down syndrome. It was completely fake.
The British Down’s Syndrome Association called it alarming. They said it is a scam. It is hurtful to people who actually live with Down syndrome.
This matters because disabled women already face serious risks. In Britain they are nearly twice as likely to be sexually assaulted compared to non-disabled women. These fake images make things worse.
A Cambridge researcher said the content is highly sexualised. The CEO of Disability Rights UK compared it to old freak shows where disabled people were put on display for entertainment.
Some AI platforms are making this easier. One platform called Higgsfield lets creators add scars, burns, albinism and vitiligo to virtual models. Their promo video even celebrates it saying AI influencers with vitiligo have been really popular lately.
Real influencers with albinism say most of this content is wrong and harmful. British influencer Mio aged 22 said it just feels wrong. She believes creators are doing it mainly to make money.
The Vitiligo Society told AFP this form of AI use is harmful and unacceptable. They said it spreads misinformation about real conditions and real people.
