North Korea Fires Missiles During US-South Korea Drills

North Korea Test-Fires Missiles as Military Drills Continue

Pyongyang: North Korea launched around ten ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan during ongoing joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea, according to the South Korean military. The missiles reportedly traveled nearly 350 kilometers before landing in the sea.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff stated that the projectiles were fired from North Korea’s eastern region, near the capital Pyongyang, and fell into waters east of the Korean Peninsula. South Korea and its allies are closely monitoring the situation while assessing the details of the launch.

Meanwhile, the Japan Coast Guard reported detecting what appeared to be a ballistic missile that landed outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone, indicating no immediate threat to Japanese territory.

The missile launches coincided with annual joint military exercises conducted by the United States and South Korea, which both governments describe as defensive in nature. Around 28,500 American troops, along with fighter jet squadrons, remain stationed in South Korea as part of the long-standing security alliance between the two countries.

Diplomatic efforts have also been underway. Earlier this week, South Korea’s prime minister met with Donald Trump in Washington to discuss possible ways to resume dialogue with Kim Jong Un. After the meeting, the South Korean leader said Trump expressed willingness to hold talks with Kim at any time.
