Study Warns Against Relying On AI For Healthcare
Experts Urge Caution Using ChatGPT For Medical Advice
ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk) – A recent study has raised concerns about the growing reliance on artificial intelligence (AI) tools, including ChatGPT, for health-related guidance, cautioning users against depending solely on AI for medical advice.
The report highlights that over 230 million people worldwide consult ChatGPT each week for questions about symptoms, safe foods, home remedies, and other health concerns. While AI can often identify obvious medical emergencies, the study found that it underestimated the severity in more than half of cases that required urgent medical attention.

Researchers tested ChatGPT using 60 medical scenarios across 21 specialties, ranging from minor ailments to serious emergencies. The findings revealed that responses were less reliable on sensitive topics, such as self-harm, with some answers appearing inconsistent or contradictory.
One of the study’s co-authors emphasized that AI should not be entirely dismissed in healthcare. When used responsibly alongside professional guidance, AI tools can offer helpful support to patients.
Experts stressed that individuals experiencing serious symptoms, including chest pain, severe allergic reactions, or rapidly worsening conditions, should seek immediate medical care rather than relying solely on AI advice.
The study also noted that AI language models are continuously updated, suggesting that their accuracy and reliability may improve over time. Ongoing research and monitoring are essential to ensure these tools safely complement traditional healthcare practices.
