Meloni Links Ukraine Peace to Trump Nobel Bid

Meloni Says Trump Could Earn Nobel by Ending Ukraine War

MELAN: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Friday that she hopes US President Donald Trump will play a decisive role in ending the war in Ukraine, a development that could prompt her to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize. Speaking at a press conference after meeting German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Meloni praised her cordial relations with Trump and linked the potential nomination to the achievement of a “just and lasting peace” in Ukraine.

“I hope that one day we can award a Nobel Peace Prize to Donald Trump,” Meloni said, adding that meaningful progress toward peace would justify such recognition. Trump has previously voiced frustration over not receiving the prestigious award, stating in a message to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre that the lack of recognition had diminished his obligation to “think purely of peace.”

Earlier this week, Trump announced the formation of a “Board of Peace,” initially intended to oversee the Gaza truce and post-conflict reconstruction, but later expanded into a broader mechanism aimed at resolving global conflicts. Italy has been invited to join the initiative; however, Meloni said constitutional constraints prevent Italy from participating in an organisation led by a single foreign leader.

According to media reports, Italy’s constitution restricts membership in bodies chaired exclusively by another head of state. Trump currently serves as chairman, US representative, and executive board head of the initiative. Meloni said she has asked Trump to reconsider the framework to accommodate Italy and other European countries, stressing that broader international participation could strengthen the effort.
