United States Grants UAE Special Export Status for Advanced Technology Access
WASHINGTON: (News Desk) – The United States has officially added the United Arab Emirates to its A:5 export control category, allowing the Gulf nation easier access to selected advanced American technologies and defense-related products. The UAE is now the first Gulf country and only the second Muslim-majority nation, after Türkiye, to receive this special designation.
With this new classification, the UAE government and eligible commercial organizations can obtain approved U.S. items through the Strategic Trade Authorization (STA) program without applying for individual export licenses, as long as they comply with the required regulations.
The authorization covers a range of technologies overseen by the U.S. Department of Commerce, including certain military equipment, commercial satellites, and spacecraft. These technologies are expected to support key sectors such as energy production, seawater desalination, and civilian nuclear power.
The U.S. Department of Commerce said the decision is intended to deepen bilateral cooperation, strengthen the UAE’s commercial, infrastructure, and defense capabilities, and advance Washington’s broader strategic interests across the Middle East.
Saudi Crown Prince Trump Call Iran Focuses on Gulf Security
Iran, however, strongly criticized the move. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi argued that the relaxation of U.S. export restrictions was a reward for the UAE’s alleged support of military actions against Iran. He claimed the policy shift reflected political considerations and called for the UAE to be held accountable.
