PBC suspends licenses of 125 lawyers over fake degrees

Punjab Bar Council Probes 1,200 Suspicious LLB Degrees, Suspends 125 Lawyers

LAHORE: (Staff Reporter) – The Punjab Bar Council has suspended the licenses of 125 lawyers and launched an investigation into around 1,200 suspected LLB degree holders across the province following concerns over the authenticity of their academic qualifications.

The action was initiated after the council received information that nearly 1,200 law degrees issued by Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai University in Sindh were considered suspicious. A detailed review of the records was subsequently carried out under the supervision of Punjab Bar Council Executive Committee Chairman Advocate Fakhar Hayat Awan.

Following the scrutiny, the council identified 125 lawyers whose LLB degrees were found to be suspicious or allegedly fake, prompting the Executive Committee to immediately suspend their licenses. The verification process for the remaining questioned degrees is still in progress.

Fakhar Hayat Awan said that show-cause notices have been issued to the concerned lawyers, directing them to submit their original educational documents, LLB degrees, and supporting evidence to establish the authenticity of their qualifications.

He warned that any lawyer who fails to verify their academic credentials or does not appear before the council without a valid reason could face cancellation of their law license in accordance with legal provisions. Criminal proceedings may also be initiated wherever required.

Awan emphasized that the Punjab Bar Council remains committed to preserving the integrity, transparency, and dignity of the legal profession.

He said there is no room in the legal community for individuals holding fake qualifications and assured that strict legal action would be taken against anyone found responsible.

He added that the council is following a zero-tolerance policy against fake degrees, forgery, and professional misconduct, reaffirming its commitment to protecting public confidence in the judicial system and upholding the rule of law.
