Trump to Receive Israel’s Highest Civilian Honor in 2026
Trump said the honor was “really surprising and very much appreciated”
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump will receive Israel’s highest civilian award, the Israel Prize, in 2026, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Monday, marking a rare break from decades-long tradition of honoring only Israeli citizens or residents.
Speaking after a cordial meeting with Trump in Florida, Netanyahu said the decision reflects an “overwhelming sentiment” across Israel in appreciation of Trump’s support for the country.
“President Trump has broken many conventions, and so we decided to break one too — to award the Israel Prize,” Netanyahu told reporters, calling Trump Israel’s “greatest friend ever.”
Netanyahu said the award recognizes Trump’s role in supporting Israel and contributing to regional stability, particularly following the release of the last 20 surviving hostages taken during the October 7, 2023 attacks, under a Gaza peace deal brokered by Trump and his team.
The Israel Prize is typically reserved for Israeli citizens or residents, with a rare exception for those making a “special contribution to the Jewish people.” The only other non-Israeli recipient under this category was renowned Indian conductor Zubin Mehta in 1991.

Reacting to the announcement, Trump said the honor was “really surprising and very much appreciated,” and hinted that he may travel to Israel to attend the award ceremony, which is traditionally held on the eve of Israel’s Independence Day.
The recognition adds to Trump’s growing list of international accolades. He frequently portrays himself as a global peacemaker and has repeatedly expressed frustration over being overlooked for the Nobel Peace Prize. The Israel Prize follows his recent receipt of the FIFA Peace Prize, further highlighting his pursuit of symbolic recognition for his diplomatic efforts.
