Pakistan fails to achieve full immunization target despite billions spent annually
(News desk)Despite allocating billions of rupees annually to its immunization efforts, Pakistan has yet to achieve complete vaccine coverage for children.
According to Dr. Sofia, Director General of Immunization, even globally recognized health initiatives have not managed to achieve full coverage. However, she noted a steady improvement in Pakistan’s performance. “A few years back, our nationwide coverage stood at approximately 54 percent. Today, we’re striving to surpass the 95 percent mark,” she said.
Recent official figures reveal that Islamabad and Punjab are currently leading the country with 90 percent vaccine coverage. Sindh follows at 84 percent, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is at 79 percent. Balochistan remains the most behind, with coverage limited to just 54 percent.
Dr. Rashida Syed, District Health Officer for Islamabad, credited consistent efforts and strong political backing for the capital’s success. “Reaching over 90 percent coverage is the result of sustained commitment. With continued focus, we aim to achieve full immunization soon,” she said.
Minister of State for Health, Dr. Mukhtar Bharath, emphasized the importance of addressing disparities among provinces. “Punjab is nearing its goal, but serious coverage gaps remain in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Sindh is progressing, yet unless all provinces reach a minimum of 90 percent coverage, controlling preventable diseases will remain difficult,” he stated.
