Musk Blames Ukraine for X Outage, Pro-Palestinian Group Claims Attack
This incident occurred amid ongoing scrutiny of Musk’s stance on the war in Ukraine.
WASHINGTON: Elon Musk has alleged that a “massive cyberattack” originating from the “Ukraine area” was responsible for the repeated outages faced by his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), on Monday.
Musk, speaking on Fox News, stated that the attack involved significant resources and could have been carried out by a large, coordinated group or potentially a country. He mentioned that the attack targeted the X system using IP addresses linked to the Ukraine region.
However, a pro-Palestinian hacker group, the Dark Storm Team, has claimed responsibility for the disruption. The group, known for its previous attacks on entities supporting Israel’s military actions in Gaza, confirmed it had launched a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack on X.
Cybersecurity experts have expressed skepticism over Musk’s claims, pointing out that DDoS attacks typically do not require state-level resources. According to a source in the internet infrastructure industry, X faced multiple waves of DDoS attacks starting at 9:45 UTC, leading to widespread service disruptions. Downdetector reported that by 10 AM ET, 39,021 users in the United States were affected, though the number of disruptions reduced later in the day.
