Supreme Court Deems Stone Crushing Near Populated Areas a Public Health Threat
Justice Shah clarified that while the court does not intend to shut down the stone crushing industry, the health and safety of the public must take precedence.
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has declared stone crushing near populated areas a significant threat to human lives, ordering immediate action to address the issue.
A 3-member bench, led by Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, heard the case against stone crushing plants. During the proceedings, Justice Shah emphasized the urgent need to relocate power stone crushers away from residential areas, citing severe health risks to nearby populations. The issue is particularly acute in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where numerous stone crushers operate dangerously close to human settlements.
Power Crushers’ lawyer, Aitzaz Ahsan, requested additional time to review the commission’s report, proposing to delay the case until after Muharram. However, Justice Shah insisted on a swift resolution, underscoring the priority of protecting human lives over procedural delays.

Justice Shah clarified that while the court does not intend to shut down the stone crushing industry, the health and safety of the public must take precedence. The Supreme Court has given a deadline to the Additional Advocate General of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the stone crushers’ lawyer to present their arguments by tomorrow. Should the stone crushers’ lawyers fail to appear, the court indicated it would proceed with the commission’s report.
This decisive move by the Supreme Court underscores the judiciary’s commitment to addressing public health concerns linked to industrial activities.
