9 Buddhist Monks Killed in Thailand Pickup Crash
11-Year-Old Driver Crashes Pickup Into Monk Procession
Thailand – (Web Desk) – Nine Buddhist monks killed in Thailand as an 11-year-old driver crashes his pickup into a procession has left the country in deep shock. The tragic accident happened on Thursday in Mukdahan province, in the northeast region, where a group of monks were walking together on a long pilgrimage.
Police said the young boy had taken his parents’ pickup truck without permission. He had stayed home from school that day because he was sick. While driving, he lost control of the vehicle and slammed straight into a line of monks who were walking quietly along the roadside.
More than 30 monks, along with a few lay helpers, were on foot heading toward another province as part of their religious journey. Witnesses say the truck swerved suddenly before hitting the group at high speed. Several monks died on the spot, while others passed away later while being treated at the hospital.
More than a dozen people were injured in the crash. Some remain in critical condition, while others are recovering from lighter injuries. Nearby security camera footage captured the monks walking peacefully just seconds before the truck struck them.
A senior police officer told reporters that the vehicle has been taken away for a full examination to understand what caused the crash. He also said the boy’s parents have been asked to come forward so officials can decide who will be responsible for his care going forward.
This heartbreaking incident has left communities across Thailand mourning, as monks hold a deeply respected place in the country’s culture and everyday life.
