US reaffirms support for peaceful protesters in Pakistan, calls for respect for human rights

WASHINGTON: The United States has reiterated its support for the right of the Pakistani people to protest peacefully, emphasizing the importance of freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. During a media briefing on Monday, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller stressed that the US stands by these fundamental rights both in Pakistan and globally.
Miller called on protesters in Pakistan to demonstrate peacefully and avoid violence, while also urging Pakistani authorities to respect human rights and uphold the country’s laws and constitution as they work to maintain law and order.
“We support freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and association in Pakistan, as we do around the world,” Miller said. “We call on protesters to demonstrate peacefully and refrain from violence, and at the same time, we call on Pakistani authorities to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms.”
