WASHINGTON/AMMAN: (Special Reporter) – The United States has confirmed that two American service members were killed and several others wounded in a series of Iranian missile and drone attacks targeting US military positions in Jordan over the past five days.
According to The New York Times, citing US officials, Iran launched four major attacks on American military facilities in Jordan during the period. The report said the repeated strikes indicate that Iran continues to possess a substantial missile capability and has demonstrated an ability to challenge US air defense systems.
US officials said the first attack struck a residential building at King Faisal Air Base, injuring at least five American personnel.
In a second attack, an airbase in eastern Jordan hosting US Black Hawk helicopters was hit, reportedly causing significant damage to several aircraft.
A third missile strike targeted Muwaffaq Al-Salti Air Base (Azraq), where around 20 US troops sheltering in bunkers were injured. No fatalities were reported in that attack.
On Friday, the same airbase was targeted again, resulting in the deaths of two US service members and injuries to four others. Several personnel sustained minor injuries and later returned to duty after receiving medical treatment.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that US and coalition forces were defending against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks in Jordan on July 17 when the two American troops were killed. CENTCOM also stated that one US service member remains missing.
Earlier, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for the attack on Al-Azraq Air Base. The IRGC alleged that the strike destroyed two fighter jets and three US aircraft, while also damaging aircraft shelters and parking areas.
However, the IRGC’s claims regarding the destruction of US aircraft have not been independently verified, and US officials have not confirmed those reported losses.
