Sony Unveils PlayStation 5 Pro: The Most Powerful Console Yet
Set for a November 2024 Release with Major Upgrades in GPU, Ray Tracing, and AI-Driven Upscaling
Sony has officially unveiled the much-anticipated PlayStation 5 Pro, which promises a significant leap in performance compared to the original PS5.
In a presentation led by Mark Cerny, the chief architect behind PlayStation hardware, the PS5 Pro was highlighted as Sony’s most powerful console ever. Scheduled for a global release on November 7, 2024, with preorders opening on September 26, the console is set to deliver groundbreaking advancements in gaming performance.
The PS5 Pro will be available at a steep price, retailing for £699.99 in the UK and AUD 1,199.95 in Australia, marking it as Sony’s most expensive console to date.
Cerny pointed out that the PS5 Pro is aimed at the most dedicated gamers within the PlayStation community who are seeking superior performance and enhanced graphics.
Key Features: Enhanced GPU, Advanced Ray Tracing, and AI Upscaling
The PlayStation 5 Pro introduces three major upgrades: a more powerful GPU, advanced ray tracing capabilities, and AI-driven upscaling. These enhancements represent a significant upgrade for Sony’s flagship console, providing an exceptional experience for both next-gen and current-gen games.
The PS5 Pro’s GPU features 67% more compute units compared to the original PS5 and a 28% increase in memory speed, resulting in faster rendering and smoother gameplay, with performance improvements of up to 45%.
Advanced Ray Tracing allows for lighting and shadow effects to be rendered at twice or even three times the speed of the original PS5, leading to more realistic and dynamically lit environments.
Additionally, the console introduces PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), an AI-driven upscaling technology that ensures sharper images and greater detail in supported games, offering an unprecedented level of visual fidelity.
Design and Storage Improvements
While the PS5 Pro’s design is similar to the PS5 Slim, it is slightly larger and does not include a disc drive, embracing a fully digital format. The console features a substantial 2TB SSD, addressing the increasing storage needs of modern gamers.
Importantly, the PS5 Pro integrates both “Fidelity Mode” for enhanced visuals and “Performance Mode” for smoother gameplay, eliminating the need for players to choose between the two and providing optimal performance without compromising graphics.
Games Optimized for PS5 Pro
Sony has also announced a growing lineup of games optimized for the PS5 Pro, including major titles like Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and Hogwarts Legacy. Additionally, enhanced versions of The Last of Us Part II Remastered and Horizon Forbidden West will be available. Astro’s Playroom will also come pre-installed on the console.
Industry Reaction
The PS5 Pro is expected to appeal to serious gamers, though industry analysts have expressed caution regarding its wider appeal. Piers Harding-Rolls from Ampere Research noted that the console’s high price might deter casual gamers. “Sony is banking on the performance improvements to encourage current PS5 owners to upgrade,” Harding-Rolls observed.
Christopher Dring, head of GamesIndustry.biz, described the PS5 Pro as a “targeted console” aimed at PlayStation’s most enthusiastic users. He added that while this release might not significantly impact the console market in a year with declining sales, Sony could be positioning itself advantageously for the anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto VI next year. “With GTA 6’s launch, PlayStation will be able to claim that the game will look best on the PS5 Pro,” Dring commented.
