ISLAMABAD: In a major step towards revolutionizing the power sector and ensuring better service delivery, the Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) has made significant progress in installing Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters across Rawalpindi. As of April 2024, more than 480,000 AMI meters have been successfully installed, with a target to reach 1.2 million installations by December 2026.
Project Director AMI, Mohsin Raza Gilani, shared that the initiative is aimed at modernizing electricity distribution and enhancing consumer satisfaction. The installation drive covers key areas in Rawalpindi, including Sadar, Civil Line, Chaklala, Korang, Swan, Jhanda Chichi, Morgah, Tariqabad, Quaid-e-Azam Colony, F Block, Chandi Chowk, Muslim Town, Kangal, Dhok Kala Khan, and Gulzar Quaid.
The AMI meters are being strategically installed in high-consumption areas and industries with high loss feeders, ensuring more accurate readings, efficient billing, and reduction in power theft. This modern technology provides several benefits, including automated and precise meter readings, timely bill distribution, enhanced power theft control, automatic complaint registration, and streamlined bill recovery. Furthermore, the technology contributes to a more balanced and stable distribution system, reducing transformer and meter burn-out incidents.
Gilani emphasized that the switch to AMI meters is free of charge for consumers and is part of the government’s broader efforts to improve customer service in the energy sector. With the addition of net metering facilities for 3-phase AMI meters, the project also paves the way for consumers to generate their own electricity, allowing them to connect to the grid and offset their electricity usage.
