Sinner Beats Medvedev To Win First Indian Wells Title

Jannik Sinner Defeats Medvedev To Capture Indian Wells Crown

ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk) – World number two Jannik Sinner secured his maiden title at the prestigious Indian Wells Masters on Sunday after defeating Daniil Medvedev in a thrilling straight-sets victory, 7-6 (8/6), 7-6 (7/4).

The four-time Grand Slam champion claimed his first trophy of the 2026 season after staging a remarkable comeback in the second-set tiebreaker, rallying from 0-4 down to clinch the win against Medvedev. The Russian star entered the final in strong form, having recently won the Dubai Tennis Championships and carrying a nine-match winning streak on the ATP Tour.

Medvedev had also stunned world number one Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals, ending the Spaniard’s impressive 16-match winning run at the start of the season. However, Sinner maintained his composure throughout the final and proved decisive during both tiebreakers.

The match remained incredibly tight, with neither player managing to break serve across the entire contest. Sinner dominated behind his first serve, winning 43 of the 47 points when it landed in play and never facing a break point during the one-hour, 55-minute encounter.

Medvedev managed to save two break points in the seventh game of the opening set, but the Italian star’s consistency in the tiebreak proved decisive. Sinner eventually sealed the set with a powerful service winner after forcing errors with aggressive forehands.

The Russian looked poised to push the match into a deciding set when he surged to a 4-0 lead in the second-set tiebreaker. However, Sinner responded with an impressive run of points to complete the comeback and close out the match.

With the victory, Sinner joined tennis legends Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer as the only players to have won all six of the ATP’s hardcourt Masters 1000 tournaments.

Speaking after the win, Sinner said he kept believing even when trailing in the decisive moments and pushed himself to attack more aggressively in order to finish the match in straight sets.

Despite the defeat, Medvedev described the result as “bittersweet.” While disappointed to lose the final, he acknowledged that his strong performance during the week — especially the victory over Alcaraz — marked a positive return to form after a difficult 2025 season.

The Russian star will re-enter the ATP top 10 following the tournament and now looks ahead to the next event on the calendar, the Miami Open, which forms the second leg of the renowned “Sunshine Double.”
